Maldives

Overwater bungalows, house reefs and the clearest water on Earth — the Indian Ocean's ultimate escape

The Maldives is an archipelago of 1,200 coral islands scattered across the equatorial Indian Ocean, and it has only one real purpose: to be the most beautiful place you have ever stayed in. Private-island resorts offer overwater bungalows with glass floors above the lagoon, house reefs for snorkelling at dawn and dusk, and an almost complete absence of the outside world. The atolls divide into distinct travel zones: North Male Atoll is the most accessible, with resorts reachable by speedboat in under an hour from the airport; Ari Atoll offers some of the best diving in the world with whale sharks and manta rays; Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — is famous for its protected manta aggregation site; and the outer atolls demand a seaplane transfer but deliver true seclusion. HaveNaGo's selection spans every level, from the legendary Soneva Jani and Four Seasons to well-regarded mid-range island resorts where the lagoon views are just as breathtaking. Fly into Velana International Airport in Male and transfer by speedboat or seaplane to your resort. Book three to six months ahead for the peak December–April season.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get from the airport to your Maldives resort?

By speedboat or seaplane, depending on which atoll your resort is in. North and South Male Atoll resorts use speedboat transfers of 20–90 minutes. Resorts in Ari, Baa and outer atolls require a seaplane — a 20–40 minute scenic flight that is itself a highlight. Your resort handles all transfer bookings; confirm arrangements at least two weeks before arrival.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

December to April is the dry northeast monsoon season — calm seas, little rain, excellent visibility for snorkelling and diving, and peak prices. May to November is the southwest monsoon with more rain and occasional storms, but resorts are less crowded and rates drop 30–50 percent. Diving conditions actually vary by atoll — the eastern atolls are better in the wet season, and whale sharks visit Ari Atoll most reliably between June and November.

Do you need to island-hop or is one resort enough?

One resort is enough for most visitors — the whole point of a Maldives trip is to slow down, and moving between resorts adds logistics without adding much experience. A typical stay of seven nights in one place lets you settle in, explore the house reef properly and enjoy the resort's activities at your own pace. Island-hopping makes sense mainly for liveaboard divers moving between dive sites.

Are there budget options in the Maldives?

Yes — guesthouses on local inhabited islands have opened throughout the Maldives since 2009, offering simple rooms with lagoon access for 60–150 EUR per night, a fraction of resort prices. Maafushi, Thulusdhoo and Fulidhoo are the most popular guesthouse islands. You cannot drink alcohol on local islands (only at resorts), but you get a far more authentic view of Maldivian daily life.
